Petrpl tank

With all this talk about ethonol removing the coatings from fuel tanks. I can recomend the product from Frost. You get a complete kit of resin/varnish remover, Metal clean and tank seal. It is good and nothing will move it. Have some on my hands and I will not move. My Falcon is done with this and have just sealed my Sunbeam and my FB trials. Looks like silver paint but sets like steel.

Re: How to clean a petrol tank out.

I have used the electrolysis method to clean the rust out on a Yamaha DT125 petrol tank (a project for my 14 year old daughter ) & it works really well.

I cant post any external links so either google it or I've found a useful page on a website called ehow.com, just type in "motorcycle fuel tank", and the one that was the best explanation was the "How to Clean a Motorcycle Gas Tank With Tap & Electrolysis" post.

Still got to start working on my own tank yet (have to wait until my broken leg heals & they remove the external frame).

A friend of mine who has several classic bike recommended to use the Petseal Ultra product to seal the tank afterwards ( on ebay for about £20 )

tank cleaning

Post  rosevilla on Sat Sep 10, 2011 4:52 pm

I had a very badly rusted tank with lots of lose rust inside , and was told the cheapest way to remove it para fine and a good handful of lose nuts or bolts and shake and shake and shake, a bit arm aching but it does work a treat

Petrol tanks

Post  Guest on Sun Sep 11, 2011 8:57 am

Am I right in thinking that car petrol tanks are steel.???
You don't have to line a car tank do you.???
So ethonal does not attack steel does it.???
Everybody is sealing there bike tanks (including me) but if you have a good steel tank or a rusty one that will clean up and treat with an antirust liquid.
Does it need treating at all.??? (car tanks are'nt)

PETROL TANKS

Post  John the bike on Thu Oct 20, 2011 9:53 pm

Hi tbird
You are right steel tanks are not affected by ethonal, onley if thay have been repaireid with the old sealant. The old car tanks are sometimes repaired with sealant but it is easier to weld a car tank becase it is not on show like a motor cycle tank.
The problems I have like many others, I have repaired most of my tanks with the old sealant and this is affected by ethonal.
I have over coated some of my tanks with the new coating and hoping this will prove OK

Regards John

Ultrasonic for tank cleaning

Post  this old bike on Mon Nov 21, 2011 3:36 am

Hello Iv'e just had my tank cleaned at western ultrasonics in Edmonton AB. and it took off all the rust thick and thin. brought it too bare steel they then put a paintable anti rust coating on it so it does not rust while it waits for the painting.

Ethanol in steel tanks

Post  keith.hodgenia on Mon Nov 28, 2011 11:00 am

As I understand it the ethanol component in petrol absorbs water from the air, this turns it acidic, so over time it will damage steel tanks. I drain down all my bikes/lawnmowers etc over the winter period just to be sure. Keith.
